I used to be addicted to try to make the front page of digg… but I often had trouble hitting the front page. Sure it would happen every other month or so but it took a lot of work. Then in 2007 one month I made it 5 times… including 2 times in the SAME DAY on Feb 21st 2007:

So how? How can one website all of a sudden become attractive to the digg users who normal HATE anything that looks close to a internet marketer…. or SEO….

BUT digg users LOVE Linux and hate Microsoft.

Well I made one simple change. I swapped out all ads for more… digg user friendly images. In particular I changed the leader board ad for a “I love Linux” banner and the square on the right to a image of a guy peeing on Microsoft.

There are a lot of lessons from this that I still apply today. Changing your website or landing page based on where your visitors are coming can help make a huge impact on conversions.

My Secret To Dominating Digg.com (years ago)

Most readers of this blog are self-employed in some fashion. If you are, you probably know that there are hassles that come with being self-employed. One of the biggest is the amount of paper that seems to stack up. Bank accounts, taxes, investments, payrolls, lawyers, receipts, bills, invoices the list goes on. I have found a solution that has made our lives so much easier.

Steps:

1) Go to Amazon and buy a Fujitsu S300M or S1500M. I recommend the S300M unless you have a really out of control paper situation. The 300 does basically everything the 1500 does.

2) Get an Evernote account. It’s free to try, but you’re going to want to upgrade to get the search within documents.

What’s this going to do?

The Fujitsu ScanSnap allows you to 1-button scan directly into Evernote. Evernote allows you to search within all of your documents even if they are just scanned PDFs, as well as tag them however you want.

This is a game-changer for most people. Suddenly instead of having to file things into a file cabinet, and not be able to find them when you need them, you can just search all of your documents.

Make Your Life Easier in 2 Simple Steps

There were not many speakers… maybe a dozen, over the 4 day event,  and each speaker got approximately 70 minutes of stage time.   It was really like a bunch of keynotes and in my opinion, everyone’s speech was keynote quality.

Each attendee was required to sign a NDA so I can’t go into detail about what people talked about or all the amazing takeaways I left with, but I can briefly outline what I talked about.

I titled my talk “The Rich Superhero”.

I started off  talking about how when I was a really young kid there were 2 things that really bugged me.  One was all the kids that made fun of me for being fat and the other was money.  If I could someday be a rich superhero I could kick all their asses and never have to let money dictate decisions.

Then talked about how I saw various angles… how I grew my companies…. how I leveraged each one into the next and shared some really out of the box marketing techniques that I have used to grow the companies/business/websites without costing me anything.

One of the biggest excuses I hear from people is unless you part of some magic crew that will promote your stuff (John Reese, Frank Kern, Jeff Walker, etc…) then you have not hope to compete.  This is bullshit and I really wanted to drive that home.

The last couple minutes of my talk I dedicated what I feel is the biggest opportunity out there today – local lead generation.

I finished early and had a lot of time for q&a.  Lots of really awesome questions from folks, then hung out and talked with people for the next 3 hours.

In my 7 years of conference going i have probably been to 50 events world wide.   I have never walked away from a conference with a notebook filled with so many “to do” items.  The speakers were excellent but the networking was as good as it gets.

This Week in the ShoeMoney Marketplace

This is a great question and I am really glad it was brought up.

First of all… No I do not sell or share your information with anyone and never will. But lets be honest… how would you possibly know if I did? (I will answer that in a bit)

Second of all DUH. People are giving you free stuff and collecting your email BECAUSE they are going to email you and try to sell you something…. eventually…. But first they want to build a “relationship” with you and show you how smart they are by giving away stuff.

Now with 99% of the junk out there I would say:

• The free stuff is not worth giving up your email
• They probably do sell your email

In the last year I have endorsed 2 products. Andy Jenkins Video Boss and right now Frank Kerns List Control. Like me they have been building their brand and relationship with their readers for years and… like me… they are not about to ruin that by doing something stupid so I trust them and am telling you that you can trust them also (but again how do you really know?).

These guys are my friends and also the stuff they have given away is unreal. And unlike others there stuff is a very limited time AND its sells out very fast.

Sidenote: If you have not downloaded Kern’s latest giveaway you need to. The software and techniques he uses is amazing. Frank told me he paid over $10,000 to have it developed and after I downloaded it I can see why.

But back to the question at hand.

How do I know if someone is selling my email address?

Answer: You create a new email address for each thing you opt into.

Sounds complicated right? Well its not. Most email systems will let you use the + symbol as a seperator and you can append whatever after that to track that email.

For instance lets say your email was james@gmail.com and you wanted to go grab this free software from Kern and see what all the hubub was about.

Just use the email of james+listcontrol@gmail.com for your email.

Gmail, and most other email providers, will ignore the + symbol and anything that comes after it and you still get the email. Try it out… its pretty cool.

I use this trick to:

1) Know of people are selling my email
2) If they are I can easily filter it out based on the address and send it straight to the trash.

So now you know FOR SURE if someone IS selling your email.

Lets Get It Cracking

Just got a email from my Facebook rep about a new policy change going in tomorrow on ads:

Hey Jeremy,

Our policy team just made a change that I don’t think will affect you at all, but I figured I should give you a heads up anyways.

We’ve received significant negative feedback over the past few weeks about ads promoting free offers which, in reality, are not free to the user.  As noted in section 8 of the Facebook Ad Guidelines, “Prices, discounts, and free offers: Ads cannot be deceptive or fraudulent about any offer made. If an ad includes a price, discount or ‘free’ offer the ad must clearly state what action or set of actions is required to qualify for the offer.” In addition, advertising is not permitted on Facebook where the business model or practice is deemed unacceptable. Some business models and practices that may violate this policy include unclear billing or participation practices. For these reasons, ads promoting deceptive free offers run contrary to Facebook’s ad guidelines and overall advertising philosophy and are no longer permitted to be advertised on Facebook.

The policy team is giving advertisers by end of day Thursday (3/11) to delete these ads and is requesting that you do not submit any new ads promoting these types of offers. Ads that remain active will be removed. They have also cautioned that advertisers who continue to create ads that violate any policy or generate strong negative feedback may have their ads disabled or face account penalties up to and including the loss of beta tools and permanent loss of advertising privileges.
