Blog your way to better health

Posted by alexis on November 26th, 2009

With so much buzz on blogging this week, I’m a little surprised I didn’t see the above claim, although there probably statements to that effect somewhere! This was definitely the week to take note of blogging tips. There was a little bit of something for everyone, from beginning bloggers to corporate bloggers. SearchEnginePeople talks about tips to keep your posts fresh and frequent:

  • Write every day, at least 5 or 6 days a week.
  • Get a routine, find the best time you work and keep the rhythm
  • When not writing, think about writing. Always carry a notebook to capture those little thoughts and ideas.

Fairly simple, but something even experienced bloggers often struggle with ~ I know I have a hard time keeping the frequency of my posts up! Of course, when you write a lot it may be difficult to come up with original posts, and too many people fall into the trap of writing content that either isn’t incredibly relevant to the site, or gets off track with readers. Copyblogger tackles some of these issues:

I’m most likely to go off on tangents when I feel strongly about the topic I’m writing on. Passion is great in writing, but sometimes I have so much to say that I try to cram everything in there — whether or not it really fits.

For example, I recently wrote a post about something that angered me in the blogging community. The original post was about five pages long. In Arial 10. Single-spaced.

I asked a friend to look it over and point out all the places where I had gone off on angles that were unrelated to my original point.

She wound up taking three pages out of the article.

Needless to say, staying on topic is a must, but sometimes easier said than done! If you still need a few insights into what makes a better post, check out John Chow’s blog about what he learned from a year of blogging.
