OMS Seattle: The Social Battle of the Pacific Nortwest.. PDX vs. SEA

Posted by Aaron Kahlow on August 7th, 2008 | Exclusive to OMC

In our opening… I made this mistake of comparing Portland to Seattle. Little did I know we’d have more Portland natives in Seattle than in Portland itself… almost every session started off talking about the pride of Portland or what a great town Portland was compared to Seattle and on it went…  So, Portland, I aoplogize for saying Seattle is a “Cooler” city and to all our Seattle readers, I still love ya!

All right, down to business, today was a super cool day b/c we got to here from some first time OMS speakers like Joe, the CEO of Bronto, Eric from Whitehorse and Adam from Jive… my two favorite moments (not to be confused with Ah ha moments) were Joe asking if there were any Tarheel or Duke fans, to which he was booed by the crowd AND Eric, Rise of User-Generated Content session where actually gave us some great real world success stories behind such.   My ah ha moment was in Thanh’s Usability session when she said “Build for the User then Build for the business” as she cited the Google example of building the most relevant search algorithm THEN years later layering on Google AdWords to make money. I think on the web this is absolutely paramount and for those that execute huge rewards and those that thinking “me first” (i.e. the business) will be left out in the cold just as they would in any relationship if they took that approach…

Heading to Daily Grill tonight with good crew… may post about our evening activities tomorrow…
